Soon the sun glittered on thousands of bayonets and drawn swords: the Medvetland Corps of Observation was moving on them with full force.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Now Medvetland has coveted the eastern fringes of the Rebel Lands since ages, as they claimed the predecessors of the people now living there stole that land from their Arch-Tsar Svatopluk IX. But it was a mere pretense: the Medved was hungry for conquest, and the greater foe, Tekirdag, had been sitting idle for the past ten years or so, being occupied with the Alanians coming from the east, and the various anti-piracy actions in the Levant; so this seemed as good an opportunity as any to come to increase the Tsar's sphere of influence.</p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p style="text-align: justify;">A company of horse detached from the marching army, and rode to the outpost situated just on the Rebel side of the pass. It was a meagre fortification, a wall no more than two feet thick, two bastions and a large two-storeyed blockhouse behind, jutting out from the mountain's rock. The officer at their head stopped at the gate under a banner of truce, and looked with disdain on the defenses. He wore a colonel's uniform, and when the gate opened, he rode in, addressing the Rebel officer in charge in an accentuated German. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">'Dear Sir, this is the formal declaration of war, signed by the State Duma and His Majesty Tsar Pavel V', he held out an envelope. 'Please take it to your rulers, whoever they might be. Then, your men have three hours to evacuate this hovel, before our cannon tear it down to ruins.' </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The Captain so addressed, Századoskapitány Otrochány Zsigmond lovag de Mátraháza, took the letter, then immediately passed it to his fastest rider, who was already mounted. After instructing the man and seeing him off, he walked back to the envoy, lit his pipe with measured motions, looked in the man's eye and said, 'You do not have to wait three hours; we are ready to take on you.' It was obvious he took the suggestion to ride to the capitol himself as provocation, a hint of cowardice - it was intended just to be so.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The envoy's face became red with rage. He turned his horse and rode away without any further exchange of words: a first hindrance to a campaign just started. He tore the white banner from the bearer's hand and threw it on the fresh mountain grass.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Unknowing to the Medvetland officer, Otrochány's Laconic answer was not without foundation. The woods near the Turulhát Pass teemed with Székely border guards and other irregulars. He had the area mapped, and his men knew of the hidden trails and safe passageways. Thus, what seemed to be a small blockhouse guarded by a hundred men, was in fact a rallying point of a force more than two thousand strong. He smirked when he thought about the surprise the Medvetlanders would soon experience.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The enemy Colonel, thinking he was out of harm's way, stopped after riding a hundred yards or so, and began shouting curses at the Rebels. 'You will never forget the day when you stood in the path of the Medvetland eagle!', he finished, pointing at the regimental banners arrayed right behind him, showing the double-headed black eagle on a white field, when a shot rang and he dropped from the saddle. Up the cliffs above his head, a Székely warrior, sitting on a rock in plain sight, reloaded his rifle indifferently: the drop was so huge that enemy musket fire could not reach him.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">'Well, Turulhát means eagle's back, so the Medvetland eagle should watch his back better than that one man did', Otrochány commented, and waved to his men to bring the two hidden three-pounder guns to the battlement.</p><p style="text-align: center;">~</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The garrison held out for five day against overwhelming odds. In the meantime, a few freshly raised units arrived to relieve them, and were spent, bravely but futilely, resisting the onslaught. By March 23, the rider reached the Rebel capitol of Pesth. On the 24th, the general edict to call to arms any able-bodied men was issued, and on the same day, a request for military aid, using the inter-state post service with changed horses, went out to Schultzdorf Palace. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">On the 25th, just about the time when Otrochány and his men finally had to give up the blockhouse and retreated back towards the mountain peaks, Princeps Erhard Berthold von Jazygen received the letter. He read it alone, then called for Erik von Südflosse, his most trusted advisor. They spent three hours in the Princeps' private chambers, then von Südflosse sent for Generalleutnant Herbert Ritter von Plischke, the Chief Overseer of the Army. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Von Plischke, upon his arrival, was presented the following orders:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><i>"You are hereby appointed <b>in supreme command</b> of the Schultzdorf Expeditionary Force. In three days' time, you shall march to the Rebel Lands with the first contingents, to aid their fight against the invaders. </i></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><i>The 1st Brigade SEF, under Your direct command, will constitute:</i></p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li><i>IR3 and IR4 without their depot battalions</i></li><li><i>KR 1. Prinzessin Anneliese</i></li><li><i>DR 2. Midnansk</i></li><li><i>A battery of ten field guns</i></li></ul><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><i>The 2nd Bridage SEF, under Generalmajor Dietrich von Spülge, will join you as soon as the units finished recruitment & requisitioning, and will constitute:</i></p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li><i>IR9 and IR11, without their depot battalions</i></li><li><i>HR 2. von Thiefen</i></li></ul><i>Bear in mind that although the Homeland is not threatened, there might be a larger Play behind the Bear's actions, so do your utmost to hinder, or, if Fortune permits, destroy the Enemy.</i><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><i>By order of the Commander in Chief, signed the War Council, March 25 1551, per the Petroglobian Calendar."</i></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Now there were some irritating factors, between the lines so to speak, in that letter that von Plishcke recognized without any overconfident clerk pointing them out. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">First, he was given <i>expressis verbis </i>(and set with bold, not without a reason)<i> </i>overall command of the expedition, but his subordinate for the venture, von Spülge, was above him in military rank. The Princeps and von Südflosse obviously thought von Spülge had not enough skill to conduct an operation so far from his well-known area of the north country. Damn the fools of the War Council who thought it a good idea to raise the man in rank, after the blunders he made during the 2nd Störkburg War!, fumed von Plischke just as soon as he was back in his coach, galloping with haste towards the Schultzdorf training grounds. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Second, von Spülge will make every delay possible while bringing no less than half of the troops available for their joint command to the theatre. He knew the man to be an ineffectual organizer, although none was better with a sword. It might take one or two crucial months for the 2nd Brigade to reach him, by which time his own brigade would be tired and depleted from marching and fighting in the unknown land. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">He sighed and put his misery aside for a moment. The Prinzessin Anneliese Küirassiers were already mustering outside their barracks. He looked at them, good fighting men, veterans of the recent war, many personally known to him. He had a good cadre of regimental officers thirsting for glory, and, being just the opposite of von Spülge's anti-talent, he <i>could </i>organize their departure in three days. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The spring sun broke the clouds as he stepped out of the coach and mounted his favourite Arab mare. Brigadier von Schalwerden stood his horse before the ranks, and greeted him with a salute. He rode closer and the two men shook hands, being old comrades. They exchanged a few words between themselves. Then von Plischke unbuttoned his coat so that all his military orders glittered in the sun, and bellowed, his voice reaching even the troops furthest away from him:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">'Now boys, are you ready for a fight?'</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6316647221204127669.post-69419968533600343602023-10-05T13:20:00.000+02:002023-10-05T13:20:05.588+02:00Now On To the Technical Part<p style="text-align: justify;">So for the next Schultze-Böhnstadt project, which I expect will take quite a long time, I'm going to use 1/72 WAS/WSS/SYW figures, mainly Strelets and HäT ones, as those seem to be available within the EU at a reasonable price.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">All figures (except command vignettes) will be placed on 80mm wide and 60mm deep bases, which is quite large if you think about it, and my table size is not so big, but I wanted big battalions instead of the traditional 'six guys taking the regimental standard for a walk' impression.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Infantry will be arranged in the following manner:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><ul><li>Regular infantry: 8 figures in two ranks plus one or two officers / sergeants / standard bearers per base, so a four-base unit should be about 36 figures</li><li>Irregular infantry and militia: just as the same, with six figures in two ranks, so about 28-30 figures per four base unit</li><li>Cavalry: three figures per base, twelve per unit</li><li>Artillery: a single gun and crew per base, reversed (60mm wide, 80mm deep)</li></ul><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">The four-base unit is standard for Maurice, but with such base sizes I can reduce or increase the number of bases within a unit just fine. Maurice calls for deep rectangular or square bases, but worse had happened.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I will soon try this out with the figures I have in my possession.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6316647221204127669.post-59382517204640759402023-10-03T10:45:00.001+02:002023-10-03T13:00:11.143+02:00Re-Organizing the Böhnstadt Army<p style="text-align: justify;">Princeps Erhard Berthold von Jazygen, in his great wisdom, has issued an edict to increase the number of new recruits to the Land Army of Schultze-Böhnstadt, in preparation for the encroachment by Medvetland to the Rebel Territories.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">As the Principality has many allies to the East, constantly threatened by the Tekirdagac border vassals and the Northern foe, intervention on the side of the Rebels is looming...</p><p>The edict calls for renaming and reorganizing multiple regiments of foot and raising three more (along with their respecitve reserve battalions). The Varangian border garrison force is also to be integrated to this structure. </p><p>This way the Army total is the following:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Eleven rgts.of foot (eight musketeer, three fusilier) and two detached Grenadier battalions under IR1 and IR2</li><li>One rgt. of foot Jäger</li><li>One large rgt.of Grenzer</li><li>Two rgts. of Dragoons, Küirassiers and Hussars each</li><li>One rgt. of mounted Jäger</li><li>Four rgts. of Artillery (each of ten field pieces) plus siege train</li><li>Additional elements like lifeguard cavalry, pioneers etc.</li></ul><p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;"><o:p></o:p></p>

I'm going to repaint some, and make up small forces for skirmish gaming. There is little to no space for me to set up a table now, and all the clubs are closed - no matter, I'm not a club going person anyway. But fighting small skirmishes on the New Continent has a beneficial effect to table size. For grand battles on the mainland, I have something in mind that's already in the making, and is mysteriously called 'Micro Maurice'... Stay tuned!</p>Andrew McCoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18203034461676669716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6316647221204127669.post-40091282142807017302020-03-29T16:10:00.004+02:002020-03-29T16:10:49.055+02:00Continent of Rot Gaming aide for Hex Conquest<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>His Catholic Majesty's Court, Burquerie-au-Sogne,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>from his most faithful S'vnt Auguste Briant du Petal,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>General of His Majesty's Armies in the Levant</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Your Highness,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am pleased to tell you that we have approached the great fortress of Diken with our armies, and undertook some minor successful endeavours in order to firmly establish ourselves in the vicinity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Admiral de la Montaigne has supported us greatly during the approach, and I will include his report on the circumstances of the naval situation around the fortress. Suffice to say that his smaller vessels had already destroyed some of the Heathen galleys, and a larger action around the cape is inevitable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me begin, then, by describing to you and H. M. the King the lay of the fortress and the challenges ahead of us. 'Diken' means 'thorn' in the Heathen tongue, which is an ample name, for it lies in a sharp pointy bend of the southern coast of the Sea of Glambria, which to the east continues in a curve towards the Tekirdagian crown lands, and to the west a narrow channel leads to Tulbuk Bay, a well known hiding place of barbarous pirates. The leader of the heathen sea forces, Emir Dürtük originates from this region and knows the waters well, but more of that later.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Diken has three outlying fortifications, which are not at all connected to the main fort itself. Two of these lie on the northern coast of Tulbuk Bay, and are meant to rule the waterways there with their large batteries. With a few Xibecs and these strong points, the Heathen can deny all access to the bay to our forces. The one at the entrance of the bay, a bit more eastward than the cape Diken is situated on, is called Meyve Pasha Fortress, and the other, opposite to the main fortress' walls is Bayram Fortress. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I tasked M. le Chef de Brigade Cambronne, Chevalier of Patrenostre, to take these with our auxiliary forces - three reserve battalions, three mercenary btn's, three musketeer btn's, ten cannon, six howitzers and naval support. He further managed to turn up some free riders to serve as his envoys and secure his flanks. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most of the land north of the bay is flat, with the occasional dunes, and the rest is rather unnavigable by foot; with the amount of space the turrets on the two fortresses can command, and the Heathen galleys' yet uncontested supervision of the coastal areas, Cambronne had managed to land, but had not yet made any progress towards the fortresses. He eagerly awaits the outcome of M. de la Montaigne's undertakings against the Heathen fleet, which, shall they be successful, would greatly ease his going, and otherwise would outright make it impossible for him to take these forts; and this could result in, point one, the ferrying of these forts' crews over to Diken Fortress, shall it be threatened, and point two, the reverse, e. g. the ferrying over of the remaining defenders of Diken, shall most of it fall to our attack.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My vanguard has already began shelling the outer fortification on the mainland, which does not even have a name, and a few auxiliary troops and a battery yet hold on to it. I expect it to fall within a day, as a dozen mortars and ten of my good cannon are directed to it. It is situated on a sandhill, and a few of my restless Hussards managed to climb the almost vertical hillside and capture three Tekirdagian guns, loading them with grape and turning them against the other crews, which caused great havoc and demoralised the defenders even more. The walls are made of dry clay, with some earthworks thrown up, and shall not resist the cannonade for long. They should either retreat to the main fortifications, or surrender - the latter would be more useful, for finding out information about the defenders' detailed strength. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now on to the fortress itself: it is an ancient construction, employing in its defensibility more the lay of the land than modern fortress-building methods. It has five to six consecutive series of walls, and is protected mostly by the lowest grade of Tekirdagian troopers, sword-armed infantry, mercenaries and bow-armed missile infantry. I expect the walls further inwards to be defended by stronger troops, notably some armored infantry, armored sipahis and musket-armed janissaries. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is important to note that the fortress has no internal port or dockyard, as the walls run down to the seashore at almost all places. Some separate gun turrets are placed outside of the walls, and the crews guarding these are ferried over from either other parts of the fortress, or the northern shore of Tulbuk Bay. There is an opening on the wall to the western side, where a small ferry could make landfall, but larger ones could not: this opening is held by a hundred or so infantry and twenty howitzers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Intelligence suggests that there are more than a hundred pieces of artillery distributed among the many towers and bastions overall, and my estimate of the number of defenders is about six thousand, together with the three small fortresses. This makes them about equal in number to my own command, the quality of the troops being the main difference. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The forces amassed by Gölcük Aga, Kiraz Bey and Dürtük Emir, I must state, cannot put up a fight on a field, thus the only reason this siege might drag on for more than a month is that the walls and geography give them a great advantage. I shall approach this siege therefore with great precaution: the rest of my Hussards are already screening the flanks, and M. Chef de Brigade Boyard has been sent with four battalions and ample cavalry support to watch out for any Tekirdagian approach from the direction of the main land. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far our losses amount to: one wounded hussar during the surprise attack on the outlying fort, and one frigate of M. de la Montaigne's badly damaged. Please find his report attached to this message.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To General the Chevalier du Petal,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sou'East of the Main Defenses near Diken Fortress,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
from Vice-Admiral Justine de la Montaigne,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
at the entrance of Tulbuk Bay</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My Dear Sir,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are well into undertaking the drawing out in piece-meal of the Tekirdagian naval forces. I sent a boat up the bay during the previous night - despite their precarious position, many of their sentries were apparently sleeping -, and they confirmed that, although larger in number than our own forces at sea, the Heathen has many old galleys prone to catching fire and of generally low quality. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Ministry of the Navy was kind enough to give me four large ships of war, fourteen frigates and four bomb-ketches. I organized these to four squadrons according to their role. The enemy has 'round twenty xibecs and the same amount galleys, now five less than at the beginning of our operations, I am pleased to inform you.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the day, with four of my war vessels I have managed to draw out five enemy galleys stationed near Meyve Pasha Fortress, and sink them, with little peril to our own ships. One of my frigates' rigging has been badly damaged, and until a new mast can be installed, I ordered her out of action, to which her captain greatly protested. But with the number of enemies ahead of us, I cannot risk losing a single ship yet. The bomb-vessels should also come in handy for M. Cambronne's siege of the two small fortresses, as the mortars on these have a greater range, and once their route has been cleared, can stay well out of harm's way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far the enemy's intention was most likely to hold up any naval advance with smaller squadrons up the bay, but now the rest of the flotilla at Meyve Pasha Fortress has warned the main Heathen fleet of our coming, and with the exception of a few reserves, they are amassing at Diken Cape. I must find out some way of splitting this force up presently, either by drawing them away with faster ships, or setting them on fire with bomb-vessels, to succeed in the assistance of taking the fortress."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"<i>To His Majesty Sultan Muhammed Ahmed III, at the court of Tekirdag</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>by Commander Kiraz Bey, Diken Fortress</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Your Most Glorious Majesty, My Padishah,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our troops are ready to die for you at Diken Fortress. I expect my provisions to hold, unless the relief force I requested from Toplerpashin Aga arrive, for two months, and the enemy to die from hunger and thirst within that period, should my raiders succeed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are strong in our faith and protected by great walls. Our fleet is glorious on sea against the feeble infidel vessels that cannot come near us unsupervised. The enemy has made attempts at the smaller garrisons, but so far we have repelled every attack. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They suffered great losses, while only a few dozen of your servants went to heaven with Your name on their lips.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I commend my subalterns Gölcük Aga, Dürtük Emir, Omar Bey and the mercenary captain Kovats Janos from the Turbulent Lands. If they do not die defending the walls, they shall be of great use to our cause.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We wish you to be in great health for the coming hundred years, and will protect Your lands with the utmost effort."</div>

As I have limited resources and I forbid my acquaintances to visit during these days, I dusted off my old copy of Cossacks: Back to War for some solo gaming fun. I have not only one, but three campaigns planned right now.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first is the siege of Fortress Diken. The narrative for this would be letters sent from the besieging side by the Chevalier du Pétal, General of the Glambrian Army, to His Catholic Majesty's Court, and Kiraz Bey, the governor of the fortress, to the Great Padishah in his seat at Tekirdag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second and third would be based on my Hex Conquest rules. One is the Varangian Wars, between Varangia, Flosse and Medvetland, the other is the Continent of Rot series I had already begun playing using the Maurice Succession Wars rules, however, I can diversify and add more factions etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So expect some content like this in the near future, while I'm organizing my hobby hoard for more games.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the two elderly warships follows a very much modern one. This is the flagship of the Glambrian West Coast Fleet, the <i>Moijeame</i>. Its name is derived from the odd dialect eastern inhabitants of the Rebellious Provinces speak, and the way they call small monkeys that are part of the fauna all along the southern seaboard of the Kingdom of Glambria. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
(Military relations between the two peoples are common, for example, the entire hussar arm of the Glambrian cavalry was founded by a rebel duke and general from the aforementioned parts of that country.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Moijeame was recently completed, she has a copper-plated hull and two main gun decks sporting 74 guns. She has a brand new set of sails, and the pennant of the Glambrian Navy flies proudly over her main mast.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the Heller Le Superbe - a Temeraire-class late 18th century ship of the line that I had for a while, and even used it for my 6mm battles as a gun emplacement. However, the model in that iteration had a few problems, like way too thick plastic ratlines and sitting too low in the water. So I cut it off its base, put a 2mm balsa wood riser underneath the plastic, and replaced the plastic masts, rigging and sails with more natural-looking materials: bamboo, cloth and thread. I think it looks way better now. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This model is a very fine basis for medium-scale plastic ships, and about half the prize of, say, a Warlord Games Black Seas range single ship (plus nominally larger scale at 1/450, although plastic ship kits are notoriously bad at their scaling). Just make sure not to use the original poor quality masts and sails (I would not recommend this with any plastic kit).</div>

This is a Revell Spanish Galeon model whose masts and oars I have replaced with wooden items. It's a cool ship to assemble, paint and rig. I guess if the galeon prow is sawed off, it could make a veritable 18th century ship of the line - however, for my purposes, these small kitbashing works do suffice.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Duchy of Armagnac, since their secession from Glambria some hundred years earlier, had been struggling with maintaining a fleet in the shadow of the Glambrian and Albionic ones, maintaining their hegemony over the seas. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In one of the recent clashes with their northern Catholic neighbors, they could lay their hands on a 30-year old 2nd rate ship of the line, <i>Majesté Catholique</i>. The name did not ring well for them, so they added a new one and painted over most of the gilding and decoration with a black and yellow scheme. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now the ship is named Le Pépé, and due to its solid build, large surface of sail and relatively little participation in armed conflicts ever since, she is in quite a good condition, forming the core of the Armagnac battle-line fleet.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Schultze-Böhnstadt Principal Navy has had no capital units so far to sail the grand seas. The country had instead relied on their Albionic allies when the necessity arose. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, to stand on their own sea legs and protect their interests on the new continent, the Grand Cabinet of the Principality has decided to build large seaworthy vessels - the first four being 36-gun frigates. Most of the funding would come from the Flossian treasury paying interest after the previous war.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Princeps Gerhard Berthold von Jazygia has decided to name them the following: Dachshund, Wolfhund, Jagdhund and Schweinhund. </div>

I've been getting back to Maurice for a little while lately, and I've got some plans concerning these imaginary 18th century nations.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You are all familiar with the old world map I've been using, the one which was created in Hexographer. Now I would like to do a new, extended one on paper that would include further away nations from the central continent. I would then create armies for them in the usual 6mm scale and customize each to play with Maurice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the main blog I'm on to naval themed things, and I could do so with this one as well. As most fleets would be small, early 18th century naval combat could be simulated with Fighting Sail or Galleys and Galleons.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the old nations so far spoken of are:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Schultze-Böhnstadt (somewhat similar to Brandenburg-Prussia and Saxony)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Flosse (similar to Austria and the rest of the HRE dominion)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Glambria (similar to Bourbon France)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Armagnac (basically a separate Huguenot French country)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Quattro Formaggi (Italy)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Varangia (Sweden)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Leuwenthaal (Netherlands)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the new countries would be:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Great Empire of Tekirdag (Ottomans) and it's derivatives on The Continent of Rot</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Medvetland (Russia)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Rebel Provinces (Hungary and Transsylvania)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Kingdom of Island Nations (United Kingdom)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There were plans for some of these as well earlier - I have a GNW Russian army disguised as the Army of Leuwenthaal, and also a complete Ottoman Turk army at my disposal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I shall be working on the complete map this weekend whilst figuring out international relations between the new kingdoms and the old.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMk-Y6oOp2ZtQETngd4F6z1Hv45DBLLEohYe3s4V8uqa-uIlH9OQHiikTIsJux0FJ1z61wgY5DBFpG1hesGsTQFsmM2J24zZ28TfzeZ7vL1TisyVmhD7BoZmqdHhFSWPOg6iYz07iPZg4e/s1600/DSCF3695.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="899" data-original-width="1600" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMk-Y6oOp2ZtQETngd4F6z1Hv45DBLLEohYe3s4V8uqa-uIlH9OQHiikTIsJux0FJ1z61wgY5DBFpG1hesGsTQFsmM2J24zZ28TfzeZ7vL1TisyVmhD7BoZmqdHhFSWPOg6iYz07iPZg4e/s320/DSCF3695.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was the usual prancing around before the State Army troops encountered the rebels in numbers. The Count of Calvacasa avoided a major clash because much required reinforcements were trickling in from the way of the Schultze-Böhnstadt border towns. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally he found a large field near the royal highway south of Lago Placco and reconnoitred it in detail. The lay of the land was good for defense and strong counter-attacks.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What neither side had considered was the fact that Northern Loyalist militia had vanished from the scene. There was no more incentive to fight against the rebels now that they held all the strong points north of the mountain passes. Therefore the State Army was not as strong in itself as it could have been - with enough militia, it could outnumber the entire rebel force two to one, but this way they even had to send a pair of Schiavona militia battalions post-haste to the front just to be sure. The loyalists still overestimated their own strength, and so did in fact Pietro di Calvacasa. Gracco di Piedi's volunteer battalions were kept in reserve and were scheduled to arrive sometime in the middle of the day the battle was calculated to take place on. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All outlying pickets were ushered in the main camp and the two armies slowly approached each other.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fields near the royal highway moving towards Lago Placco and the northern towns are wide grasslands with the occasional small grove signaling moors or dried up lake beds. The highway is straight as an arrow as it moves toward Civita Maria and the Böhnstadt border. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rebel army was drawn up facing roughly south right on the road. There was a small unnamed village and fields of fresh crops to their right (west) flank and a small sandstone hill further west. The center was dominated by the road and surrounding plains, but there was a thicket moving east by southeast. A small slope proved a good place for the regimental guns right near the road.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Count dismissed the importance of the hill overlooking the village and used it to hide his reserves instead. The Glambrian storming party was therefore left in the village to expel any cavalry advance on the extreme right. Next to them were placed the Böhnstadt Freikorps von Schütterstöck, a good quality and well motivated unit. Further ahead the Calvacasa militia had hidden between the crops in a loose formation. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The main infantry line was drawn up between the hill and the thicket. The foot dragoons were sent ahead to protect the artillery on the slope.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The woods itself were a tactical conundrum for the rebels. The Count expected a large amount of skirmishers to swarm it, so his units had to get there first and expel them. Therefore his best Varangian infantry and mounted Freikorps were tasked with occupying it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next problem was the expected large number of loyalist cavalry. Good battle cavalry was completely lacking from the rebel ranks, the best they had were the Freikorps and Calvacasa Outriders, the latter closer to light dragoons than anything else. These were massed on the left flank east of the woods to exploit the large open field. The Count expected the enemy cavalry to be drawn up there as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The loyalists quickly deployed in battle order, but misjudged the effective distance of the rebel artillery and paid dearly for it.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Freikorps cavalry and elite Varangian infantry rushed into the woods and prevented the enemy Cacciatori to move in. However this exposed the cavalry to musket fire from the main battle line.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the combined effort of the Civita Maria regulars, their regimental amusette and the Calvacasa outriders, one enemy cavalry unit was turned back before long.</div>

This is the bird's eye view of the situation: the Cacciatori were shot by the Varangians emerging from the thicket, and charged by the disorganized but spirited hussars. </div>

At first it seemed that the main body of infantry could drive a wedge between Calvacasa's flanks as it occupied the empty space and released volley after volley. The foot dragoons were cleared out, the militia fell back. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The commander of the light dragoons on the loyalist left could sense that the rebel line was anchored on the sandstone hill, but could see no movement. The dragoons moved up the hill in loose formation, but then out of nothing they received a shattering volley from the houses, and then the Glambrians charged them. It was a rout they could not recover from. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile the militia fell back and Freikorps Schütterstöck moved forward. The Parmigiano Guardia di Honore, sent only to bolster the loyalist ranks but of little value on the field, stood for a while but could not match the expert musketry of the Böhnstadters. Now both loyalist flanks were threatened.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The State Army general could well perceive this and started reforming his lines around the center infantry units still holding their position. One Schiavona militia unit was ordered to about face to keep the Freikorps cavalry in check, and the rest of the line rallied succesfully.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAWUpFBNekZ6kWdlNcUpbPO8PfKIEIdqvt8c-W620u1mWv9UpwHvsQYevax-L-jSeKIYkqZgkhYYhwDLe2Tg9OnmUBvRxjkmXcfzBag13NbjFyR4sqkqikLR_d2dNy6l_JPrOlcYm77QEB/s1600/DSCF3705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1165" data-original-width="1600" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAWUpFBNekZ6kWdlNcUpbPO8PfKIEIdqvt8c-W620u1mWv9UpwHvsQYevax-L-jSeKIYkqZgkhYYhwDLe2Tg9OnmUBvRxjkmXcfzBag13NbjFyR4sqkqikLR_d2dNy6l_JPrOlcYm77QEB/s320/DSCF3705.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was the moment when Gracco di Piedi's reinforcements arrived in numbers and fell at the exposed loyalist left flank at once.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Freikorps hussars chased both Cacciatore units off the field.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZe1nR4zoYKpKmtZXEVHttKFKobUU3KzOxf-DQkr1XtGKm4wgoIya8LJ8sn7eckpJMTdDzONLDeW8k2-xg1z4rcd9TrgztQkqjhyphenhyphenkayG8qfT1lsIBG1NbBgIlKGcZvEQr2ayiEKlHM4Cy/s1600/DSCF3707.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1148" data-original-width="1600" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZe1nR4zoYKpKmtZXEVHttKFKobUU3KzOxf-DQkr1XtGKm4wgoIya8LJ8sn7eckpJMTdDzONLDeW8k2-xg1z4rcd9TrgztQkqjhyphenhyphenkayG8qfT1lsIBG1NbBgIlKGcZvEQr2ayiEKlHM4Cy/s320/DSCF3707.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
However the Calvacasa Outriders were less successful, participating in a pitched battle made them lose their nerves and they entered a flight back to safety.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhza8JccbcjUQDuKG2QOAcVFcPvA5Fv6dMKR2ddhV4MqVFw9nzC8E8hhQ1i4ofQQdBAGWW6VVxAlxqabUxpIb9spJIVOU4UzFPGllvlOjz5vtjfIl9RRaLuRty9Qecqq8MlNaiocwuG19LW/s1600/DSCF3708.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="883" data-original-width="1600" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhza8JccbcjUQDuKG2QOAcVFcPvA5Fv6dMKR2ddhV4MqVFw9nzC8E8hhQ1i4ofQQdBAGWW6VVxAlxqabUxpIb9spJIVOU4UzFPGllvlOjz5vtjfIl9RRaLuRty9Qecqq8MlNaiocwuG19LW/s320/DSCF3708.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Good to link up with you boys!", the Squire of Piedi told the Glambrians who did not understand a word, but joined the counter-attack without hesitation. The Schiavona militia unit in the loyalist front line disintegrated under the combined volley fire of three enemy battalions and fled.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNiO1jCnPaqtMwBILRZ_HxWxf7pe96QobHgCwq9anyKt4lkERa1jN3o_PLvXInhDXy-b2VVRIjgGhWBLNQ5k07HH9A7jf6J0gzP2PDSJEQJm-dTZmVRVrt_P0cBcOg8KdmHFQUze31JQAw/s1600/DSCF3709.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1254" data-original-width="1488" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNiO1jCnPaqtMwBILRZ_HxWxf7pe96QobHgCwq9anyKt4lkERa1jN3o_PLvXInhDXy-b2VVRIjgGhWBLNQ5k07HH9A7jf6J0gzP2PDSJEQJm-dTZmVRVrt_P0cBcOg8KdmHFQUze31JQAw/s320/DSCF3709.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At this point I had a dilemma to solve. The loyalist right still had two more or less intact battle cavalry formations, but they were led by a Northern militia commander (they couldn't spare anyone more competent). If he countercharged, the disorganized rebel left may have fallen apart. But by that time he must have received word of the fresh enemy troops arriving on their left. Is he a pansy or the hero of the day? I let the dice decide - odd numbers, he flees to safety with both squadrons, even numbers, he countercharges.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the result.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcPzDthTNIl_w8nYsiwffoYLcFzM6ILW48TlWxgPer_nsk2tKD4Iv5kXNKMcUEODic7mmurQ1j3VrH87Hplgb9HcmZ71GB5ZrLxr1Ok0nSqL2zlX7YVSisUUiU-sLB_HCuTkhfpAyHdMu2/s1600/DSCF3710.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="744" data-original-width="1600" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcPzDthTNIl_w8nYsiwffoYLcFzM6ILW48TlWxgPer_nsk2tKD4Iv5kXNKMcUEODic7mmurQ1j3VrH87Hplgb9HcmZ71GB5ZrLxr1Ok0nSqL2zlX7YVSisUUiU-sLB_HCuTkhfpAyHdMu2/s320/DSCF3710.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fortunately the loyalist general had multiple units within safe distance of the edge of the field and these could retreat, not completely intact, but useful for later in the campaign. However, as all cavalry units abandoned him, he had to order his front infantry line to fight a rearguard action. These held off the rebels long enough that the rest could disengage, but surrendered after.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tally for the battle:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rebel forces</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 unit of foot dragoons dispersed</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 unit of light dragoons routed (staying on the field)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Loyalist forces</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1 unit of Schiavona militia dispersed</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 units of regular infantry and 1 Honor Guard unit surrendered (about 450 POWs)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 guns captured</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3 units of cavalry, 2 Cacciatori, 1 Schiavona militia and 1 Honor Guard unit escaped</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was a good and exciting battle and I should do more of these.</div>

The Count of Calvacasa now has a solid power base in the north, with all three strongholds held in rebel hands. Now the following measures must be taken, as addressed by the war council:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Civilian support for the liberation effort. Without the help of the populace, the army shall not succeed. This may be gained by making Schiavona legislation null and void, and let each municipality resort to their own costumes and local laws. The old Calvacasa Code may also be reinstated. Fortunately the treasury has enough gold still to alleviate some of the more burdening taxes as well. This worked in Civita Maria and should work in the countryside.</li>
<li>The training of volunteer and depot battalions. Although no catastrophic loss occured yet, it is always better to prepare for the worst. As before, the Count does not wish to resort to levies though, and the suggested number of regulars moving against him does not require it either.</li>
<li>Training a new officer corps. 'Civilian' officers of town&country militias suffice for a while, but soon it will not be enough. The war council will take great pains to train not only the men but their leaders as well.</li>
<li>Mercenaries. The fierce Glambrians worked well for the rebel cause, and now it seems that a few Schultze-Böhnstadt Freikorps also wish to join them.</li>
<li>Meeting the enemy head on. Once the rebel army grows a thousand strong, the confrontation may not be avoided any more. The Schiavona regulars will not dare the mountain passes, but they hold the broadest one on the royal highway, so that is the most likely place for a pitched battle.</li>
</ul>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the hunting camp of the great Franz Josef. He moved in near the colony border recently. He usually provides his own food, and has a fowling piece and a large calibre rifle to do so. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The figure is an IMEX pilgrim and the camp is made from cloth, match and bamboo sticks, rocks, moss, a HäT artillery bucket and spare musket... it provides a nice atmosphere.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also changed the huts to better quality and more New World-looking ones. There's also a high quality chicken (turkey?) coop.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The game is turn-based. Each turn represents multiple weeks' time, but nothing is set in stone.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Turn order:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Resource management</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Investment</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. Difficulty</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Population changes</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5. Exploration</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Characters</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each figure represents a character in the colony's life. Some may die of old age, incidents or battles. The large majority of them will have a fixed abode - one house should fit four to eight or nine people depending on its size and facilities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some characters who have spent more time in the colonies may become Proficient at one or two skills, which may be broader aspects of life (such as Good Governance or Exploration), or minor but useful tasks (like Masonry or Carpentry).<br />
A town militia may be maintained by the inhabitants, but don't forget that men sent on fighting duty stay out of the everyday work and have to be provided for.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. Resource management</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During this phase, the colony's income is calculated based on invested labor and infrastructure available at the beginning of the turn. (In a broader sense, this means that each investment starts producing its bonus effect in the next turn after it is completed.)<br />
<br />
Three types of resources may be gathered: lumber, food and ore. All remaining resources may be brought over subsequent turns.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Taxes </b>are an income of the colony's treasury. This income may be used to better living conditions or supply materials for major investments. The colony's tax policy is decided by the Governor, so tax income is not available until a Governor's house is built and a representative is elected. Tax is gathered in the homeland currency, Böhnstadt Thalers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Lumber</b> - includes building materials and firewood. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each resident sent on lumberjacking duty gathers 2 units of lumber per turn (can be increased by proficiency to 3). Gathering branches for firewood yields 1 lumber per turn. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Food</b> - one unit of food maintains a family for one turn. Don't forget to stock up for the winter months. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each character sent on agricultural labor will gather 1 Food per turn. Two characters with proficiency may gather 3 per turn together.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each character sent hunting rolls 1d6: 1-2 no Food increase, 3-4 1 extra Food, 5-6 2 extra Food (the result may be increased by Proficiency either to always yield 1 Food or to increase the last increment to 3).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Ore</b> - may be acquired by trade from the natives or mined if a deposit is found during the Exploration phase. Each character sent on mining duty procures 1 Ore every second turn (or one each turn with proficiency).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Investment</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the Investment phase, the town may be expanded by adding new buildings or features. A few characters shall be redirected to do the work, during this time they cannot produce other materials (except if they have a proficiency in construction skills and thus may finish sooner).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Simple log / plank house - 3 Lumber</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Houses a large family.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fancy house - 5 Lumber<br />
House for people with higher status.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shed - 1 Lumber</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A useful storage facility not to be mistaken with an outhouse.<br />
<br />
Wheat field - 2 Food<br />
A single wheat field may yield a maximum of 4 Food per turn, after that, a new field must be ploughed and planted.<br />
<br />
Vineyard, Orchard - 3 Food 1 Lumber<br />
Another source of food production.<br />
Upgrade to Winery: 5 Food 1 Ore - increases Tax income by 1 Thaler per turn.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thick fence - 2 Lumber (about 4" in length)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To protect the town borders. Existing fences may be brought down and set up elsewhere free of charge.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Church - 5 Lumber</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the spiritual well-being of the people.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Roads - 2 Food (about 4" length)<br />
A section of good road leading to town increases trade and is a pre-requisite of some buildings. As it would be unfair to require tax income to build roads, the basic cost is the feeding of the workforce and the relocation of human resources.<br />
<br />
School - 8 Lumber<br />
To educate the children.<br />
<br />
Public Building - 8 Lumber<br />
Such as a revenue office, barracks etc.<br />
<br />
Governor's House - 10 Lumber<br />
The number one building in the town. Once a Governor's House is erected, public officials may be chosen.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Smithy - 2 Lumber, 2 Ore</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Used to create metal tools and other useful objects. Increases Tax income by 1 Thaler per turn.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Upgrade to Weaponsmith: +4 Ore and 5 Thalers - further increases Tax by 1 Thaler per turn.<br />
<br />
Inn - 10 Lumber - requires Roads<br />
Fun for the inhabitants and increases the flow of trade. +1 Thaler per turn.<br />
<br />
Marketplace - 6 Lumber 1 Ore - requires Roads<br />
Increases tax income by 1 Thaler per turn.<br />
Upgrade to Regular Market - 10 Lumber 2 Ore - increases tax income by a further Thaler per turn.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Log cabin - 20 Lumber</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For added protection. May be built outside of the town.<br />
<br />
Ore mine - 10 Lumber<br />
Before starting to extract an ore deposit in the mountains, a mine must be built.<br />
<br />
Chicken coop, pigsty - 4 Lumber<br />
Provides 1 food per turn without a character's attendance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<b>Non-infrastructure spendings</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Keeping a house warm during the winter months - 1 lumber per turn<br />
Hiring mercenaries for guard duty or exploration - 1 Thaler per three fighters<br />
<br />
<b>Trade</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before a Marketplace is established, the colony may trade with the natives, giving trinkets or firearms for food and ore. Lumber is readily available, so it is not valuable for the natives or the colonists.<br />
In the Marketplace, Food/Lumber exchange is 1/1, Food/Ore is 3/1 and Lumber/Ore is 2/1. One Thaler may be used to purchase a bundle of new tools, firearms, 2 Ore, 4 Lumber or 6 Food, upgrade the militia etc.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. Difficulty</b><br />
Roll 1d6 for each turn: 1-2 small difficulty, 3-4 medium difficulty, 5-6 large difficulty. A large difficulty has a diminishing return: if one occurs, another may not occur from the second following turn to the third following turn. If there are large difficulties in two consecutive turns, one may not occur for five turns after the second one.<br />
<br />
Roll another d6 and consult the table below:<br />
<br />
Small difficulties<br />
1-2 - Threat on the harvest. Birds, locusts or other invasive animals must be kept off the fields. Delegate at least two colonists for the task.<br />
3-4 - Drought. Halve the food income for the current turn. Food gained from hunting is an exception.<br />
5-6 - Military Campaign. The Schultze-Böhnstadt government has military plans for the colony which must be supplied in every way possible, including building shelter and providing food for the troops, sending the militia to aid them, or warn friendly natives of the coming campaign, which results in the ceasing of all trade.<br />
<br />
Medium difficulties<br />
1-2 - Storms. No new colonists will arrive and exploration will be impossible for the turn.<br />
3-4 - Hostile Tribes Invade. They set up camp in one of the explored areas and have to be expelled, otherwise they will raid the trade and mining routes.<br />
5-6 - Disease. 2d6 members of the town will not be able to work. In any consecutive turn with this result, roll 1d6 only.<br />
<br />
Large difficulties<br />
1-2 - Pirate Raid. Commerce with the home country becomes impossible unless the S-B Navy intervenes. The pirates will attack the town itself as well.<br />
3-4 - A Shed Burns Down. Half of the stored and gathered Lumber or Food is lost. A fire brigade may be able to mitigate the loss and only one quarter would be gone.<br />
5-6 - Internal Strife. Families may become hostile or people would kill each other in a duel.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>5. Population changes</b><br />
In each turn when the colony prospers, 1d6 inhabitants arrive. Prosperity in this case means steady tax income, all threats would be dealt with and there is an adequate reserve of food and building material.<br />
On the other hand, people may die of old age, illness or combat, and some may migrate to other colonies if hardships are too much for them - use common sense </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>6. Exploration</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the exploration phase, expeditions are sent out to find valuable land and materials in the surrounding areas. This is a good way to fill the map with features. An expedition must consist of at least two characters.<br />
<br />
Once an area is explored, roll on the Terrain features table and subsequent tables.<br />
<br />
Terrain features<br />
1-2 - Plains<br />
3-4 - Woods<br />
5-6 Mountains<br />
<br />
Terrain hindrance<br />
Plains and woods:<br />
1-2 None<br />
3-4 Rocky outcrops<br />
5-6 River or stream<br />
Mountains:<br />
1-2 None<br />
3-4 Steep hills<br />
5-6 Impassable hills<br />
<br />
Terrain resources<br />
Plains and woods:<br />
1-5 None<br />
6 - Ore (add +1 to the roll if a river flows through the area)<br />
Mountains:<br />
1-4 None<br />
5-6 Ore</div>

<br />
A small group of S-B settlers arrive at the more or less unexplored shores of the New World to set up a small colony. The settlement is stylishly named Neue Böhnstadt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
As the number of inhabitants grow, construction begins on new buildings.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a small occupation I have been planning for a while, perhaps I'll write some small mechanics how the colony will expand and what hardships it would face. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
South of the Formaggian mountains, on the lands once occupied by the House of Prosciutto, the success of the northern rebellion has motivated the gentry to begin their own campaign of separation/liberation/looting and killing innocents. They are led by Marco di Mattone, a relative of the exiled Prosciutto leaders. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a few days of gathering troops, the small army began to move on the royal highway to sack passengers. Unfortunately, a large group of Schiavona regulars just happened to march that way. The rebel scouts had warned the main army of the fact, and di Mattone decided to entrench his force and fight a defensive battle.</div>

After the flanks had been secured, the regulars launched an advance, by the book, against the fortified positions.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The loyalists then performed an oblique maneuver, and in support of the heavy artillery, took the rebel positions by afternoon. A few of the rebels managed to flee, as the dragoons were too occupied in hunting down the remaining enemy horsemen. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although dubious in quality, the numbers dissolved by the loyalist column could have come in handy for the Count of Calvacasa, and they even failed to tie down Schiavona reserves for long enough. On the positive side, the Northern rebels' morale will not be much affected by the defeat of their southern brethren.</div>

So I've just finished a bunch of pirates, which has got me thinking about the Caribbean. I have a bunch of ships already, and just ordered/bought some terrain (aquarium stuff and 30 palm trees from China). I will perhaps need a smaller fortress than the one quarter I have, and more colonial buildings, but then the game is on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have eyed the Revell pirate ship (the re-issue of the Zvezda Black Pearl / Black Swan) for a while, but then remembered that the same can be had for a lot less investment with cardboard, balsa and decor rubber, and I can suit a scratch-built ship for my wargaming needs, unlike a more rigid construction of a plastic model. My plans include a larger, multi-story merchant vessel (with a hollow compartment to hide loot and possibly figures in it), and a few smaller ones for the pirates, much like the <a href="http://randomncreative.blogspot.hu/2017/05/the-bohnstadt-royal-cutter-sms-springend.html">Springend</a>, which was an easy and fun build with very spectacular results.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, my Christmas present, which I bought and brought home myself, not wishing to rely on mythological figures such as the Postman, contains the Revell re-issue of their SYW figures - two hundred infantry and thirty cavalry, which will give me more time to think about future projects.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would like to make some GNW/SYW Russians from the Revell Austrians, because I seriously lack them, and a few native troops from the Prussians. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The figures are not the prettiest, and they have lots of flash, but hey, it was not very expensive (got them on a sale), and they serve my purpose.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwYDCTt2pE2HQ1kps8g0-aF2oq3wwbrmTk8uAHkhC57NakaMAieY_kKvA95cSpr4tMga2OeYdn8xDMEOYXbubKP-2qVHRFYqMwEtiWIBEujbovKCrqco2IH4d6VWczSUf-T3YQf11dZfBI/s1600/DSCF3552.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="1600" height="158" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwYDCTt2pE2HQ1kps8g0-aF2oq3wwbrmTk8uAHkhC57NakaMAieY_kKvA95cSpr4tMga2OeYdn8xDMEOYXbubKP-2qVHRFYqMwEtiWIBEujbovKCrqco2IH4d6VWczSUf-T3YQf11dZfBI/s320/DSCF3552.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Qutut Bog was the site of a clash between the Böhnstadter colonial army and the Glambrian expeditionary force. Although a more numerous Glambrian force was the one to start an advance, they were somewhat surprised in their positions - although not on par with the hardy Böhnstadters, the Glambrian soldiers were fleet-footed enough to form battle order and move their heavy battery up the sandhill east of Qutut Town.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>The battle started with a determined Böhnstadter advance in the center and the right. A detachment of native infantry covered the left, the mercenaries and European foot the center, and the cavalry took the extreme right, although somewhat limited by the foothills of Qutbalat Ridge.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The infantry advance in the center seemed uncoordinated first, but then the lines were straightened like clockwork.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLIYweCWlw8bQUGfbY1bucml157O0GqckotgRDdihIucnltIgdK4ehmDeIRDLCDgMg4Xi1ptgZsoIS0QPghN5o-92fsBWXcDh2ILMbse_ZjNOIFXADI6T5P-wagQ0vRP9vLCRrJY4IJrK/s1600/DSCF3553.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLIYweCWlw8bQUGfbY1bucml157O0GqckotgRDdihIucnltIgdK4ehmDeIRDLCDgMg4Xi1ptgZsoIS0QPghN5o-92fsBWXcDh2ILMbse_ZjNOIFXADI6T5P-wagQ0vRP9vLCRrJY4IJrK/s320/DSCF3553.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Despite receiving heavy bombardment, the Böhnstadter foot held, and a cavalry action developed on the Glambrian left, as their cavalry moved to counter the enemy advance. The Glambrian horse was pushed back, but the heavy battery mauled a Böhnstadter Dragoon unit so badly they had dispersed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAq7-Lu1oAyn4zFKLo1ot4NptUbVlCHj6kGgWybGPAmt3P2_u4Q2Dbsj_AG6d1yMt2TQXNP5bLKImLQiuDflDqJMlj1Y1ZXwHUrjfI555L3nZTHM9-tMeaMKJhi8xVNKPldf9DdWb3dlP/s1600/DSCF3554.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="709" data-original-width="1600" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAq7-Lu1oAyn4zFKLo1ot4NptUbVlCHj6kGgWybGPAmt3P2_u4Q2Dbsj_AG6d1yMt2TQXNP5bLKImLQiuDflDqJMlj1Y1ZXwHUrjfI555L3nZTHM9-tMeaMKJhi8xVNKPldf9DdWb3dlP/s320/DSCF3554.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The cavalry combat still resulted in the Glambrian notable being captured, three units of horse destroyed, the fourth one cut off and taken captive.<br />

On the Böhnstadter left, the great bog reduced mobility, and the unruly native foot ran out in the open, only to cut up by the Glambrian regulars. Still, by this point the battle on the other flank was decided. The Glambrian general asked for the honours of war, which the Böhnstadter commander in chief, being mindful of the state of his own troops, granted.<br />
<br />
Campaign results:<br />
Glambria concedes – 1EP<br />
Notable captured<br />
<br />
Böhnstadt gains 4EP – 1 for Fighting, 1 for Carnage, 1 for Accepting a Surrender, 1 for Honors of War<br />
<br />
SB loses a dragoon and an irregular unit<br />
Glambria loses 4 cavalry units<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first campaign turn begins with the Formaggian colonial army, intent on expanding their influence on the Continent of Rot, marching across the safe borders of Diamantia towards a major south-eastern town in the Alliance of Silver Princes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A rag-tag army under Rajah Duran opposes them, and before the Formaggian Generalmaggiore Calzito could have a say in it, they are within marching distance. The Formaggians have no choice but to deploy and fight.</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiMI0UHViTrcYc4q_ePPbgUngQUoTQtk0OV6YQOGE3psM6c_Hgsy9XBP0Xau_dsFOdmFuvnMG240H_aCBKPp8TgpVhzPl8TKzd7rmEkikTo3gm3_XnM7jfi1OX0aFKq9HTwXJ_5F683R5/s1600/DSCF3337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="776" data-original-width="1600" height="155" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiMI0UHViTrcYc4q_ePPbgUngQUoTQtk0OV6YQOGE3psM6c_Hgsy9XBP0Xau_dsFOdmFuvnMG240H_aCBKPp8TgpVhzPl8TKzd7rmEkikTo3gm3_XnM7jfi1OX0aFKq9HTwXJ_5F683R5/s320/DSCF3337.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The large amount of tribal foot and horse shied away the Formaggians, at least at first. They soon came to learn that the true power of the enemy is their grand battery.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmbcHA0JR3IKGpA9wCe0Bt5l2bNBboYPW1avej9-Cyz1-xBQv5tQaHxrZUqOLDBcdK3JntfZizEfrvXOKlJ28grjSyJOvTcKQoRID8rDdmvd1asiWKN3LukY3zmU2W3nJQQ5CJs4u51Kd/s1600/DSCF3338.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="673" data-original-width="1600" height="134" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmbcHA0JR3IKGpA9wCe0Bt5l2bNBboYPW1avej9-Cyz1-xBQv5tQaHxrZUqOLDBcdK3JntfZizEfrvXOKlJ28grjSyJOvTcKQoRID8rDdmvd1asiWKN3LukY3zmU2W3nJQQ5CJs4u51Kd/s320/DSCF3338.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After some hesitation, General Calzito decided that the best defense is a good offense, so he swore a bunch then ordered a general advance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_GO1CDoaUoFs51slU3YRbS-Z3DuxN1H6SHESGKXq0LI3M61NXOfjC7sAcOYGtxmQQavklesLpvFjNwbPLES6L5t2CnBdRxaHBpTkgU2-9aCSVPDdyppS17UMBNz2PTCkUCRx3Rf3OZ9L/s1600/DSCF3339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="702" data-original-width="1600" height="140" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_GO1CDoaUoFs51slU3YRbS-Z3DuxN1H6SHESGKXq0LI3M61NXOfjC7sAcOYGtxmQQavklesLpvFjNwbPLES6L5t2CnBdRxaHBpTkgU2-9aCSVPDdyppS17UMBNz2PTCkUCRx3Rf3OZ9L/s320/DSCF3339.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Formaggian left was dominated by the tribesmen nesting in the woods, combined with the devastating fire of the enemy grand battery, right up until the Formaggian cavalry was drawn up and went through the tribal horse as a knife does through butter. The center was not at all heavily engaged.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhguZ8vp8hsQbxCYDpAgx1jVBPjflqTl_W_R3HJRz2L9YzUPYLeIPNtZove72v_G0MCulvWIDhZv7B9EgyHee_ipE3bfHwXVABd7Ct7Kkw4ggxlaqrD4sihkzDvYIw_CEDP0P9kIAriM9Ud/s1600/DSCF3341.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="805" data-original-width="1600" height="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhguZ8vp8hsQbxCYDpAgx1jVBPjflqTl_W_R3HJRz2L9YzUPYLeIPNtZove72v_G0MCulvWIDhZv7B9EgyHee_ipE3bfHwXVABd7Ct7Kkw4ggxlaqrD4sihkzDvYIw_CEDP0P9kIAriM9Ud/s320/DSCF3341.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One Pretoriano horse regiment (the ones in funny helmets) was so badly shot up by the re-positioned enemy battery that they had to fall back. The rest of the work was done by the Dragones di Malaria and the other unit of heavy horse. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The center line was just about to enter a hotter contest, and initial volleys were exchanged, but at this time the grand battery was trodden down, and the remaining group of Siferdar horse had surrendered. Rajah Duran decided to concede the battle and fell back with the rest of his army more or less intact.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Campaign results:</div>
<br />Formaggian Pretorian cavalry breaks.<br />Formaggia receives EPs:<br />1 for Carnage<br />1 for Honours of War<br />1 for Marginal Victory<br />1 for Accepting a Surrender<div>
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another bright idea of mine is to begin a Maurice "Succession Wars" campaign set in Not-India, using the sketched map above. This way events on the main continent would play little part, and I can field all those guys in turbans. Maybe one or two battles a week, and a campaign log similar to the one I did on the Formaggian wars (except this time we don't know the clear result).</div>
